Terminal Server Connection (RDP)

If you have a local printer that is not showing up in your RDP session try the following
  • On server (Especially 2008) ensure that all users have full access/ownership of C:\Windows\System32\spool
  • ensure printer has sharing enabled on local machine
  • ensure RDP connection shares local resources (printers)
  • login to RDP machine and download/install drivers for local printers
  • add newly installed printers under an LPR or USB port perhaps? try this out more and report back...

Share a network printer across RDP
  • should be simple if we have the IP address of the printer

Troubleshooting on the RDP side:

Enable RDP session printing on the server
  1. Open a Run menu and type: tsconfig.msc
  2. This will open the RDP Session Host Configuration applet. On the right hand pane double-click RDP-TCP
  3. Click the Client Settings tab inside the RDP-TCP properties window
  4. Ensure that Windows Printer and LPT Port boxes are not checked in the Disable the following section

Add print drivers by logging into TS as admin:

If a local printer is not showing up in the RDP machine you may have to download and/or add the printers to the RDP machine itself.
  1. Click Start
  2. Click Settings
  3. Click Printers and Faxes
  4. Within Printers and Faxes click File and choose Server Properties
  5. Switch to the Drivers tab to install drivers onto the TS
